Join Disability Rights North Carolina in Celebrating 15 years as NC’s Protection & Advocacy Organization!
During the month of July 2022, Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC) celebrates 15 years as the state’s Protection & Advocacy (P&A) agency, dedicated to advancing and defending the rights of people with disabilities.
After three decades as a state government agency, the Governor’s Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities merged with the former Carolina Legal Assistance in July 2007 to create DRNC, a private, independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Since that time, we have continued to fight for disability rights in North Carolina.
DRNC is the only organization exclusively dedicated to advancing and defending the rights of North Carolinians with all types of disabilities, of all ages, throughout our state. We do this work with a staff of 50, supplemented by legal interns, contract staffers, and volunteers. DRNC uses a wide range of legal and other advocacy strategies, including information and referral services, community outreach and education, public policy and coalition work, individual representation, and systemic litigation. Our areas of focus include access to education, employment, housing, physical and mental health care, self-determination, access to community services and supports, and voting rights. We also monitor and investigate abuse and neglect in facilities, such as psychiatric hospitals, developmental centers, children’s institutions, nursing facilities, prisons, jails, and schools.
DRNC staff work tirelessly to create a just society where people with disabilities are free from discrimination and abuse. Our vision is a fully integrated and accessible community – where people with disabilities have power, equal opportunity, and freedom to make their own decisions.
This July, DRNC will celebrate our anniversary milestone by featuring 15 stories that highlight the impact of our work over the past 15 years. We invite you to join us in our celebration by following, “liking,” and sharing our updates on social media. You can also show your support by becoming a recurring donor to DRNC. In honor of our anniversary, please consider a donation of $15 a month. Your recurring or one-time gift of $15, or any amount, allows DRNC to advocate for more disabled people who need our expert legal help. By supporting DRNC’s efforts, you join our fight for the human rights of people with disabilities.
Your tax-deductible donation is a symbol of your solidarity and an investment in the protection and advocacy system that secures the rights of more than two million North Carolinians living with disabilities.
