Population (Juvenile Justice, Criminal Justice, Parole, Probation, Jail, Prison, etc.,)
System Group
Adult Corrections
Women & Men
Location
Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction
Purpose/Goal
Evaluate the psychometric properties of indices of lifetime exposure to traumatic brain injury (TBI) among prisoners. This study examined the criterion-related validity of the OSU TBI-ID by determining whether summary indices of lifetime exposure to TBI are significant predictors of consequences of TBI that would be expected in an offender population. (Bogner Ph.D. & Corrigan Ph.D., 2009)
Screening Tool Used
What tool was used?
Ohio State University Traumatic Brain Injury Identification Method (OSU TBI-ID)
When is screening done?
Information about the study was communicated to inmates via flyers posted in the units and distributed in classes and groups as well as via direct communication with potential subjects. Inmates were informed that they could refuse to meet with the interviewer without penalty. If the inmate agreed, an appointment at the prison was made with an OSU researcher. (Bogner Ph.D. & Corrigan Ph.D., 2009)
What happens after screening?

Community Resources
Information and Referrals
All subjects who potentially met criteria and who agreed to a referral met with an OSU researcher to discuss the study, to obtain informed consent, and to be subsequently screened to determine eligibility. (Bogner Ph.D. & Corrigan Ph.D., 2009)
Trainings
The research staff had clinical experience and had received comprehensive training on the use of all instruments. (Bogner Ph.D. & Corrigan Ph.D., 2009)
