Purpose/Goal

The goal is to create and strengthen a system of services and supports that maximizes the independence, well-being, and health of people with traumatic brain injuries across the lifespan, their family members, and their support networks.

  1. Improve the surveillance of TBI in Vermont,
  2. Improve care transitions for individuals with TBI and their families/caregivers,
  3. Improve ease of access to programs and community support services,
  4. Implementation of screening for TBI upon entry into the correctional system,
  5. Create a person-centered culture in the correctional system for underserved individuals with TBI.

BIAV carried out these activities through their information, and referral and assistance helpline. They also offered consultation to individuals.

Trainings

Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (VDAIL) partner the Brain Injury Association of Vermont (BIAV) conducts training, presentations, outreach and awareness under the grant project. Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (VDAIL) also takes on outreach activities to partners. For example, Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (VDAIL) presented to stakeholder groups like the University of Vermont Medical Center and the Choices for Care program staff and staffed a table display at the Annual Brain Injury Association of Vermont Conference.

Vermont’s Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (VDAIL) and their partner Department of Health have agreed to add two Traumatic Brain Injury questions to the 2020 Adult Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey to enhance surveillance efforts. Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (VDAIL) also completed a process to identify a contractor to help evaluate the Brain Injury State Annual Action Plan.
