Purpose/Goal

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of brain injury histories and their associations with drug abuse and related problems. The study examined self-reported head injury histories as a way to identify potential brain injuries and the problems associated with brain injury. (Hiller, Ph.D, Leukefled, D.S.W., Staton, MSW, & Walker, 2003)

Head Injury was assessed using five questions:

  1. Have you ever been in an auto accident and received a head injury?
  2. Were you ever knocked out in a fight?
  3. Have you ever had a head injury from an accident at work or another event?
  4. Have you ever had a head injury resulting from a bike/motorcycle accident?
  5. Do you believe you have received a head injury as a child from an accident or from abuse by a parent.

Participants were drawn from facilitates at about three months prior to their scheduled appearances before the parole board. (Hiller, Ph.D, Leukefled, D.S.W., Staton, MSW, & Walker, 2003)
