June gave birth to her baby in the bathtub of her hotel room. Yes, you read that correctly. Displaced by Hurricane Matthew, June and her family had been living in the hotel for months when she went into labor. She had gone to the hospital, but they sent her away thinking she wasn’t really in labor. Her family had no food and no place to live when they called DRNC. They all have disabilities.

June is not her real name of course, but her story is true. Fortunately, because of donations from supporters for our disaster recovery work, DRNC advocates were able to help June. They found her a home and connected her with resources for her baby.

People are still in need from past hurricanes, and now a housing crisis from the pandemic is underway. Like June, many people will be on the streets. Our disaster relief team will continue to advocate for people with disabilities in need of housing.
