Seeking Staff Attorney – CASE Team

DRNC is seeking a staff attorney to join the Client Assistance Services & Engagement Team (CASE).

Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free legal advocacy services to people with all types of disabilities, of all ages, throughout North Carolina. DRNC is committed to building race equity into our internal and external work.

Job Description

A part of DRNC’s advocacy work is providing high quality legal advice, assistance with self-advocacy efforts, and brief services to individual clients through our fast-paced Client Assistance Services & Engagement Team (CASE). The CASE attorney will report to the CASE Supervising Attorney and work as a member of the CASE Team. The attorney will be responsible for the identifying and researching legal issues, and providing high quality legal advice, self-advocacy assistance, and brief services to individuals with disabilities who contact DRNC for help. The type of help DRNC can provide depends upon a caller’s legal issue(s) and our current advocacy priorities (targets). Full-time preferred; part-time (30+ hours per week) may be considered for strong candidates.

Job Duties (to be performed with or without reasonable accommodations)

  • Work and communicate directly with individuals applying for our services. They will review email and voicemail messages, spot legal issues, provide legal advice via telephone to clients, and also handle live telephone calls from applicants requesting our services.
  • Draft well written letters, documents and other materials to send to clients after completing interviews in a timely manner, and/or send materials published by DRNC for public use as appropriate.
  • Work with DRNC legal staff to identify areas of further inquiry and determine the cases that are suitable for extended representation.
  • Participate in outreach activities to under-served populations.
  • Quickly spot and analyze legal issues and provide quality legal advice and information in a fast-paced environment;
  • Conduct research and analyses of pertinent legal authority;
  • Work efficiently with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism;
  • Think critically and exercise independent judgment;
  • Work independently with appropriate supervision;
  • Communicate well, including the ability to listen and probe potential clients for relevant information related to their issues;
  • Outstanding case management and organizational skills;
  • Meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail;
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse populations.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school;
  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina, or has taken steps to become licensed in NC;
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Disability Rights North Carolina and to the civil rights of people with disabilities;

Preferred Qualifications

  • Life experience with a disability;
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish or ASL;
  • A demonstrable passion for working directly with clients and client services or for social justice;
  • Legal experience in a nonprofit or public interest environment;
  • Experience advocating for the rights of people with disabilities;
  • Experience working with people with disabilities;
    Commitment to continuous improvement.

Salary and Benefits: The salary starts at $46,000. Disability Rights NC offers benefits that are a 100% employer-paid. They include health, dental, vision, life and disability as well as generous paid time off and retirement plan with an employer match.
