Seeking Disability Law Fellow

Disability Law Fellowship

Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC), a nonprofit legal advocacy organization, is North Carolina’s Protection & Advocacy agency and the recognized leader in advancing the legal rights of people with all types of disabilities, of all ages, statewide. Our advocates are dedicated to ensuring that disabled people have the supports they may need to live independently in the community, with equality of opportunity, free from abuse, discrimination and neglect. DRNC uses a range of advocacy strategies, including individual and impact litigation. DRNC is committed to building race equity into our internal and external work.

Funding from a private foundation supports a Disability Law Fellowship that offers a significant opportunity for emerging attorneys to develop their talent and skills in advancing disability rights. DRNC is seeking exceptional attorneys with 0-3 years’ experience and strong commitment to our mission and vision, to begin a 2-year legal fellowship commencing fall 2023.

DRNC has hosted various legal fellows and there are different forms the fellowship could take. One model has been for a fellow to gain experience on two or more teams, including the Community Inclusion; Community Access; Education; Client Assistance, Services & Engagement; Investigations and Monitoring; Policy; Litigation; Criminal Justice; Disaster Recovery; or Voting Rights Teams. Another has been for a fellow to choose a project that fits within a single team’s advocacy priorities or “targets.” (Learn more about DRNC’s targets.)

Eligible candidates will be licensed to practice law in North Carolina or must sit for the next NC Bar exam. The Fellowship is a full-time opportunity at DRNC, paid at a rate and with benefits commensurate with other staff attorneys.

To apply, please send a detailed letter of interest explaining your qualifications and interest in the Disability Law Fellowship, resume, and writing sample to:

We strongly encourage individuals who have previously developed a relevant fellowship or project proposal to include it with their application materials.

Applications received by November 14, 2022 will received priority consideration. A decision will be made by mid-December and applicants will be notified.
