How difficult? Join Disability Rights North Carolina on Friday\, September 27\, 2024\, to celebrate the 34th annual anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)\, a historic civil rights law protecting the rights of people with disabilities. \nThis simulation will be provided by reentry experts from OurJourney\, and the new offices of the Southern Coalition for Social Justices will provide the location. In addition to the simulation\, attendees will receive brief Brain Injury 101 and Disability Justice training. In this Re-entry Simulation\, you will learn about the many barriers individuals with brain injury and other disabilities face when they are released from prison. Participants experience the difficulties of finding a job\, keeping a stable home\, going to treatment regularly\, and following release rules. This experience is magnified when the individual returning has one or more disabilities and no established support systems. \nAt this event\, participants will engage in role-playing and group discussions\, and individuals will gain a deeper understanding of the obstacles faced by community members returning from incarceration and explore ways to support successful reintegration. Attendance is free\, but you must register because space is limited: \n\nCommunity Partners\nDisability Rights North Carolina \nDisability Rights North Carolina is a legal advocacy agency that fights for the rights of people with disabilities in North Carolina. We handle cases involving discrimination\, abuse and other rights violations. All of our services are at no cost to North Carolinians with disabilities. We are a private\, independent\, 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a member of the National Disability Rights Network. \nOurJourney \nOurJourney is a nonprofit organization created by a group of former North Carolina prisoners who met behind the razor wire\, reconnected in the free world\, and determined together to do more than celebrate their individual freedom. From reentry kits to essential services\, from resource guides to peer-to-peer mentoring\, from one side of North Carolina to the other\, OurJourney is a new approach to freedom\, where being released from prison isn’t just an occasion to anticipate but also a journey to join. \nSouthern Coalition for Social Justice \nSouthern Coalition for Social Justice is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in August 2007 in Durham\, North Carolina by a multidisciplinary group\, predominantly people of color\, who believed that families and communities engaged in social justice struggles need a team of lawyers\, social scientists\, community organizers\, and media specialists to support them in their efforts to dismantle structural racism and oppression. \n
